According to the American Heritage Dictionary sustainability can be defined as, "an attempt to provide the best outcomes for the human and natural environments both now and into the indefinite future." Sustainability is intended as a means of configuring human activity so that society; its members and its economies are able to meet their needs and reach their greatest potential today, while preserving biodiversity and natural ecosystems, through means of planning and acting for the ability to maintain these ideals for future generations. Sustainability can be investigated at every level of organization, from local neighborhood entities to the entire planet. To attain sustainability we must work from the bottom up."
