Paper Summary:
This paper discusses capital punishment on the basis of criminal deterrence, economical effectiveness, moral justification and respectful observance of the victims? lives. In this paper, the writer has examined the issue, focusing on first degree murder, from the four aforementioned perspectives and provides his own arguments against this practice.
From the Paper:
"In the United States, capital punishment is rarely conducted. However, the mere presence of the act has caused a generations-old debate about whether punishment by death deserves to remain a legal option. When discussing matters that concern the fate of a life, it is very important that a viable conclusion be reached in regard to it?s qualification as a legal punishment. If it is deemed unnecessary, it should immediately be abolished before another life is taken. After analyzing this issue from the highest degree of objectivity that I could maintain, I have decided that capital punishment serves no benefit to society and therefore should be eradicated. A far more valuable service to the American people is to institute a program of rehabilitation for convicted first-degree murderers so that they can be given the opportunity to provide a worthwhile contribution to society. I support a nationwide prison rehabilitation program that would counsel these inmates, determining the cause of the behavior, and providing a quality replacement behavior that would provide that person with the same benefits that he or she received from murder. An independent counsel team should be assigned to each prison. Keeping the federal government out of the rehabilitation program would decrease the level of bureaucracy. This counsel team would determine when an inmate could be released."
