"Critique of a Nursing Theory Introduction Margaret Newman's theory of health as expanding consciousness initially evolved out her work with Rogers on the science of unitary human beings (Johnson & Webber, 2005). Newman later synthesized various concepts and theories such as Hegel's dialectical fusion of opposites, Young's theory of human evolution, and Bentov's theory that time is a measure of consciousness (Marriner-Tomey & Alligood, 1989). The practical application of the theory as pattern recognition was tested by Newman as she cared for her mother who was struggling with a chronic illness."
