Written in 2005; 1,800 words; 3 sources; $ 71.95

Paper Summary:

In this paper, it is shown that the precepts of gender and class stereotypes are heavily generated throughout "Working Girl" by Michael Nichols. In this manner, McGill displays many of the known traits of appearance, language, and fashion that limit her advancement into upper management. The paper shows how these factors prevent McGill from being seen as anything other than a sex symbol or passive entity.

From the Paper:

"This psychological study will analyze the various societal aspects of gender role stereotype, as they appear in the film Working Girl, directed by Mike Nichols. In this manner, various issues of sexism and negative stereotyping in the workplace arise, as the secretary Tess McGill must endure male patriarchal aggression. Through understanding the various stereotypes of gender and class status in this film, one can realize how women are judged by various behaviors in gender within corporate patriarchal institutions. The film Working Girl (1988), directed by Mike Nichols reflects the various aspects of gender role allocation that the secretary, Tess McGill (Melanie Griffith), represents within her profession. Although McGill portrays astounding talents as a business manager in organizational development, she is invariably categorized as a mere secretary by her sex alone."
