This paper attempts to explore the efficacy and efficiency of electronic fetal monitoring (EFM). The paper further attempts to gain a further understanding of EFM, its history, its current frequency of usage and whether or not its usage is an efficient and effective addition to maternity care.

"In fact, in 1968, Benson et al. noted that "no reliable auscultation indicator of fetal distress exist(s) in terms if FHR (fetal heart rate), save in an extreme degree" (qtd. in Tallon, 1996, p. 49). In 1989, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists published their Technical Bulletin #132. In this publication, they emphasized the equivalence of auscultation and EFM for intrapartum fetal assessment(Chez, Harvey & Harvey, 2000). "The SOGC (Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada) was more definitive, stating that auscultation is the preferred method when the woman and fetus are at low risk, because use of EFM leads to unnecessary interventions" (Carr & Schott, 2002). However, today, FHR monitoring by electronic monitoring, represents the standard of fetal assessment during labor."
