"Correction of metabolic abnormalities, antibiotic treatment and radical surgical debridement of the dead tissue are vital treatments in dealing with the infection. [McHenry] Broad spectrum antibiotics are recommended once a culture has been obtained, with Penicillin being the choice drug, and Clindamycin for those anaerobes resistant to Penicillin and aminoglycosides can be used against the gram-negative bacilli. [Callender, p. 2] Also of concern are the related symptoms of fever, tachycardia and general disorientation, sometimes accompanied by anemia or jaundice due to bacterial hemolysis, and left untreated, the body can go into systemic shock."
