"Stroke is the third most common cause of death in the United States following heart disease and cancer. More than 500,000 new strokes occur annually, resulting in more than 150,000 deaths. In the United States, stroke is estimated to cost $43 billion yearly in medical expenses, rehabilitation, and loss of employment. Stroke is characterized by the sudden loss of circulation to an area of the brain, resulting in a corresponding loss of neurologic function. The majority of ischemic strokes are due to thromboembolic arterial occlusions with 75% in the distribution of the carotid artery. Acute ischemic strokes are caused by thrombosis or embolism and accounts for 80% of all strokes. Restoration or improvement of perfusion to the ischemic area is the key therapeutic approach. A number of strategies have been employed to improve blood flow to the ischemic region. In 1995, the National Institute of Neurologic Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) stroke study group first reported that the early administration of recombinant tissue-type plasminogen activator (tPA) benefited some acute ischemic stroke patients."
