"Just as Mt. St. Helens was considering blowing, Jimmy Carter declared that American athletes would not be allowed to compete in the Summer Olympics. Apparently, this was because the the Olympics were being held in the USSR, which had recently "invaded" Afghanistan (they would have said "liberated"). However, on March 14th the Olympic boxing team had been killed in a plane crash in Europe. (Mondout) The Olympics committee protested this combination of politics with pure sport, as did the American athletes, many of whom were serious contenders for the gold and risked missing their peak by waiting another four years to compete. Carter would be punished for this choice both by seeing Russia winning about one third of the total medals and having won the moral upperhand in the eyes of sports lovers everywhere. (Wikipedia)"
