"India?s developing conditions, along with the rural nature of most of its people has played a strong part in the country?s major health problems. This state of affairs has lead to a disturbing lack of adequate surgical care for India?s mostly rural population. (Udwadia, 2003) In addition, malaria, tuberculosis, sickle cell anemia, and diarrhea are all common problems in the region. (Ellis, 2004) Polio too has been a recent epidemic in the country. With India being one of only two countries in the world to see a significant rise in polio cases in 2002. (?Current?, 2003) These diseases, although easily treatable in more developed countries, are sources of suffering and death for the people of India, in many cases."
