Paper Summary:
This paper analyzes the characters in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" and "On the Rainy River" in order to illustrate the concept that what motivates authors to convince readers towards an alternate view is the belief that society cannot exist on its own. The paper points out how the authors of both use the movies and the characters in the movies to express the theme that society is made of individuals and that, if an individual feels severed from the group, it is the society's duty to rectify the problem and recruit the individual back to its fold and conventions or risk losing the individual altogether.
From the Paper:
"The essence of any piece of literature is the moral, the lesson and the message the author wishes to present to the reader. Most writers attempt to reconcile a problem present in society by presenting an alternative view of the situation. They may do so through twisting the situation ironically, presenting an allegory or satirizing the characters in order to best influence the reader. The characters the writers create are usually derived from real life cases and have a direct influence on their lives. Consider ?One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest? where the writer has created a mentally challenged hero while the main character in ?The Rainy River? by Tim O'Brien is a soldier shown as a misfit unable to reconcile to conventional life. What motivates authors to convince readers towards an alternate view is the belief that society cannot exist on its own."
