Paper Summary:
This paper is a detailed look at the social and economic reforms implemented by FDR during his presidency in the Great Depression. The author specifically discusses the Social Security Act as part of the New Deal, and examines how social security evolved, and the present day problems that arise from social security, i.e. the impending money shortage.
From the Paper:
"The year 1933 dawned bleak and dreary across the darkened horizon of U.S. economics. The stock market crash on "Black Tuesday" in October of 1929 had instantaneously transformed the magic of America's Roaring Twenties to the tragic of America's Trying Thirties. A seven-year drought beginning in 1931 had turned many of the nation's fields, along with much of the nation's last hopes, to dust. By 1932, America was deep within the grip of what has come to be known as the Great Depression, with no hope on the horizon and no recognizable end in sight. U.S. President Herbert Hoover, believing in the security of a collapsed economy, offered little in the face of this great need, therefore the American voting public in 1932 offered little in the way of support in return, ushering into the White House a new president with a new deal that offered new hope to a nation down on dreams and out of options."
