This paper provides an overview of the savant syndrome, a psychological state in which rare individuals with obvious subnormal intelligence possess exceptional skills in some special area of brain function. It examines how many striking advances have been made concerning the savant syndrome and how the investigators have concluded that there is no good evidence for savant giftedness or pure innate talent. It looks at how the consensus is that these exceptional abilities are acquired, most often under optimal environmental conditions.

"In addition to some more spectacular talents, many savants have special musical abilities. These include perfect pitch (i.e. knowing which key to perform a particular piece in without knowing anything about key structure), the skillful playing of a musical instrument by ear (i.e. hearing a piece of music and being able to perform that piece from memory) and the ability to sing entire operatic arias after just one listen. Perhaps the most famous modern musical savant is Leslie Lemke, blind, crippled by cerebral palsy and with the mental functioning of a three-year-old child. According to Leon K. Miller, Lemke, a gifted piano virtuoso, "could reproduce any piece of music flawlessly on the piano with only one hearing" (2001)."
