The paper explores the different ways these children are reared, through religion, culture, ethics and basic background. Specifically, the paper focuses on the issue of breastfeeding and how it is viewed by the different cultures.

"The typical American mother sees her infant as unreasonable, demanding and manipulative, and that she should not give in to its whims and caprice (Mojab). This early, the infant must learn the lesson. Although the Asian mother feels the urge to pick up her infant and to nurse it, the prevailing beliefs and preferences seem much more compelling and decisive of her place in that society. She begins to adopt the American view about breastfeeding: that the infant should be taught independence from early infancy. This is why the bottle is introduced in lieu of the breasts, so that the mother can be set free, their separation is facilitated and others can feed the infant."
