This paper explains that the 19th century was a transitional period for the institution of marriage, bridging the traditionalist Victorian era and modernity. The author points out that, as seen in Jane Austen's "Persuasion "and Kate Chopin's "The Awakening", literature became an important forum for dismantling assumptions regarding the fundamentally imbalanced and unnaturally politicized basis for marriage. The paper relates that Austen helps to expose marriage as a process less defined by human emotion than by social pressure; whereas, in Chopin's work, this critique seems somewhat more sharply directed at the one-sided contract, which is marriage under the pretenses of a rigid class-based social order. The author suggests that this essential gap between their works is because Austen's was published at the beginning of the 19th century rather than its close as was Chopin's story.

Indeed, as he seeks to prevent his daughter from marrying the man whom she truly loves due to his shortcoming of social status, he endorses a marital system in which the choice of one's mate is determined primarily by the nobility of blood. Of Sir Eliot himself, Austen indicates, "his good looks and his rank had one fair claim on his attachment; since to them he must have owed a wife of very superior character.""
