This paper examines the sex industry in New York City, particularly at Broadway and 42nd Street, opening into Times Square. The study begins by looking at prostitution in the early 20th century in the form of brothels and burlesque houses, alongside the center of vaudeville entertainment. It continues on through to the 1960s, when the sexual revolution made what was once merely tacitly accepted, into something explicitly and notoriously available. Finally, the paper focuses on former Mayor Rudy Giuliani's term, and his aggressive stance on pursuing the Time Square Now! project, aimed at cutting down on crime and revitalizing 42nd Street. The paper concludes that, while the changes have been fairly drastic over the last decade, have reduced crime and enhanced the attraction of the famed mega-intersection to tourists, these changes have been the product of policy efforts which are arguably inappropriate.

"In the 1960's, the sexual revolution made what once in Times Square was merely tacitly accepted into something explicitly and notoriously available. Its prime raison d'etre from that time through to the end of the 1980s was for the easily evident pushing of prostitution, the dominant storefront presence of adult bookstores, the urban cash-cow of strip-joints and an outdoor meat market for conventional to deviant opportunities for all manner of visitor. At this time, it was less an attraction to tourists than to locals who frequented its establishments and to late night talk show hosts, who made 42nd Street's obvious erosion the subject of constant barbs."
