Abstract This paper examines how few topics capture the attention of academics and non-academics in quite the same way as the psyche of the modern man. That is to say, people in the contemporary age tend to see the world around them in ways that would have been utterly inconceivable to their forebears. With that in mind, the paper explores four literary works; Shakespeare's "Hamlet," Walt Whitman's "Song of Myself," Nathaniel Hawthorne's "Young Goodman Brown" and Tayeb Salih's "Season of Migration to the North." Abstract Modern man is in a predicament. He cannot please everyone. He cannot do any thing right. Kafka had personally experienced this situation. He vividly portrayed it in his writing, which are autobiographical in a sense. With "The Metamorphosis" as a basis, but drawing upon other sources as well, this essay begins by providing a definition of "modern man" and then examines the genesis, the nature and the consequences of the predicament. Ultimately the essay explores the way to come out of the predicament.
From the Paper "The value of a work of literature, or of any other creative endeavour, lies in its universal appeal. Kafka's novella The Metamorphosis is a widely acclaimed landmark of twentieth century literature. We can completely empathise with Gregor Samsa, the protagonist of The Metamorphosis. Samsa's concerns are our concerns. W.H.Auden very aptly says, "Kafka is important to us because his predicament is the predicament of modern man." [1] The Metamorphosis can be read at various levels. At the simplest it is a bizarre tale of the transformation of a young man into a "monstrous vermin". How the provider of the family becomes an alien in his own home appears to be a tale of pure fantasy. But at a deeper level it is a tale of the author himself. Samsa, the name of the protagonist, is a cryptogram for Kafka. [2] Samsa's family situation is very similar to Kafka's. In a letter to his father written in 1919 (a letter which was never sent) Kafka accuses him of wanting to live off Kafka. [3] In the novella Gregor's father is living off Gregor's income despite having saved a reasonable sum of money from his collapsed business. But most important, Gregor's suppressed desires and emotions are really those experienced by Kafka. We finally realise, without being told, that Gregor's predicament is not only that of Kafka, but that of modern society as well. We come to this realisation because we have read works of other writers that deal with this issue, we have known about people who have been plagued by this predicament and to a varying degree we have experienced it ourselves."

Jung discusses the need for modern man to return to the values needed to live: faith, hope, love and insight. While the clergyman has no true knowledge of psychic disease, he has much more to say about these ultimate values and quests of the soul. Many over 35, Jung says, fall ill because they lose their religious outlook (or fear the clergyman too judgmental). Jung encourages patients to pursue both a scientific psychotherapy, as well as the wisdom of an unprejudiced clergyman to give meaning and form to any neurosis, and ultimately lead a healthy life."

According to Forester, this contemporary dilemma plaguing humanity is defined by the inability to make meaningful connections not only across distinct boundaries drawn by the existing social hierarchy but also between man and the natural world around him (alienation in the romantic sense). Furthermore, this tale can be interpreted allegorically with Leonard Bast's character representing Forester's model for the common man, Henry Wilcox portraying the self interested industrialist and the Schlagel's (especially Margaret) exemplifying the liberal intellectual 'voice of reason.'

From the Paper "Richard Wright was one of the greatest African American writers; he was also the first African American to have produced one of the famous novel of racism and its psychological affect on the individuals in his masterpiece "Native Son". Born in 1908 in Mississippi, Wright father left the family when he was only six years old and when he was ten his mother had a paralytic stroke and was unable to work. Wright after a formal education was forced to seek employment in order to support his family. The first half of the twentieth century was a crucial period for the African Americans, the discrimination against them had taken a different form and shape and there were little jobs available for the black people. Wright worked for a series of menial jobs, he wanted to continue his education by using the local library but the Jim Crow Laws stopped him. He nevertheless solved this problem by forging his notes and pretending that he was collecting books for a white man. Wright in this period read many of the renowned American writers such as H.L. Mencken, Theodore Dreiser and Sinclair Lewis. After passing a civil service examination Wright became a post office clerk but soon after the Wall Street Crash and the Depression this job was lost too. After a series of temporary jobs Wright found a job with the Federal Writers Project, which enabled him to write and publish his work."

The fact that he leaves the town in search of a place where he would be a man, completely satisfied with having his gun with him shows that there is no epiphany to be gained. There is no moment of sudden enlightenment for him."

It is also relevant that a gun is an object that gives one power and not a way that one becomes personally powerful. This emphasizes that Dave is not actually making himself more powerful and overcoming his repression. Instead, he is just gaining a means of making people respect him. In short, he is attempting to take his power back by force. Even in gaining the gun though, Dave does not actually achieve this aim. Instead, he shows his confusion because he does not know what to do with the gun once he has it. Most importantly, he continues to act as if he is powerless by sneaking away to use his gun. "
