Abstract This paper discusses Richard Allestree's "The Government of the Tongue" and his discussion in the book about the use of speech and how it impacts mankind's spiritual relationship with God. From the Paper "Returning to the war in Iraq for a moment, one can view the other side of defamation. According to Allestree, one engages in defamation, not only when one knowingly spreads falsehoods, but also when one spreads information without ascertaining whether that information is actually true. However, this type of defamation has not received the same type of secular condemnation as the intentional propagation and spreading of falsehoods. On the contrary, despite evidence that he led the nation to believe that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction without ascertaining the truth of those statements, President Bush was re-elected as president in 2004. Allestree's position would have suggested that Bush be held accountable for his actions, even though he did not appear to be motivated by malice. In fact, Allestree even linked this type of lying to idolatry, because it suggested that the speaker worshipped his own imagination over God. While such a statement may appear controversial, it certainly suggests that any political leader claiming to be a Christian has a moral obligation to ensure that he is speaking the truth, not merely that he is speaking what he believes to be true."

Abstract The paper explains that the brain usually processes semantic information by first identifying lexical characteristics and then using that information to narrow its final word choice down to the target answer, but this form of processing does not take place in the tip-of-the-tongue (TOT) phenomenon. The paper then focuses on this phenomenon and defines it as what happens when individuals report being unable to recall a specific word or target answer, but are able to produce generic recall responses that share semantic and phonological characteristics with each other and with the target word. The paper presents two hypotheses about the TOT phenomenon but then refutes them, showing that differences in incidences of the TOT phenomenon are not dependent on instructional context or on gender.

According to Brown and McNeill (1966) in one of the first studies printed on the subject, the TOT phenomenon occurs when one cannot recall a word of which one has knowledge and yet has the impression that recall is imminent. Manufacturing "close" guesses as to the identity of the target word is common when an individual is in this state. It can range from forgetting the name of a friend, the street that an acquaintance lives on, or even the name of a television program."

It is her mother?s means of communication in an English-speaking society. But Tan?s mother tongue is more than ?broken English.? From the Paper "It appears that English is to become the main language in Europe, and perhaps the world. This topic has been discussed extensively and widely and there has been massive scientific research in recent years. I came upon the article ?The Great English Divide? merely by chance, and the discussion caught my particular interest, as I am a Dutch-speaking Belgian, living in multi-lingual South Africa and currently studying towards a degree in English. I surfed the Internet, and found hundreds of articles discussing this same subject. The articles of my choice are only a few examples. Professor David Crystal has nominated a book to the subject ?English as a global language? , where he researched these three questions: What makes a world language? Why is English the leading candidate? Will it continue to hold that position? David Crystal has written a number of books on the topic itself. My main interest is how this globalisation of the English Language will influence English as a language. Is the idea of globalisation of English not just a triumphalist notion? Will the increase of the use of English in non-English speaking countries change English vocabulary and grammar? Will the use of 'Fusion English' increase? Paradoxically, could it mean that the population of Europe will become monolingual and could therefore mother languages become extinct?"

Abstract This paper focuses on how the English tongue was derived from Germanic by examining the similarities between the structure and vocabulary of Old and Middle English and German. It looks at how Anglo-Saxon was an inflected language with a structure that is still retained by modern German speakers, coupled with word gender, past participle formation and the process of compounding. It explores through a literature review of works such as "Beowulf" and the Anglo-Saxon poem "The Seafarer" how the English that we speak today essentially evolved under the influence of many languages and how the Germanic tongue was perhaps one of the most instrumental in its formation.

The Germanic influence on Old English meant that it was a synthetic language structured on the inflection of nouns and adjectives for four cases in the singular and four in the plural. Through the inflection of Old English one could distinguish the job a word did in a sentence by its ending, regardless of its position. For example, the difference between the Modern English sentences, (i) the woman saw the man, and (ii) the man saw the woman is a matter of word order."

From the Paper "In both Rodriguez's "The Achievement of Desire" and Anzald?a's "How to Tame a Wild Tongue," the subject matter is the social power of language and the need for Spanish-language users to acquire the dominant language in order to achieve social benefits. But as the essays show, the attitude toward this process is quite different in Anzald?a and Rodriguez. Anzald?a seems hostile to the English language and to a culture that does not honor the Spanish language in general or various Spanish dialects in particular. Her general response is one of defiance, for example when she says that to attack an individual's form of expression (in her case, speaking her Chicano Spanish dialect at school) with the intent to censor "is a violation of the First Amendment" (40). She makes it very clear that she is determined to be linguistically free despite English oppression -- "free to write bilingually and to switch [linguistic] codes without always having to translate" (41). She is determined always to have a "wild tongue." If Rodriguez is hostile to the same culture, he does not seem to be hostile to either Spanish or English per se. Instead, he develops the view that in American culture, where one language only and educational accomplishment are connected to social and material benefit, those who seize the power of language and education are more likely to obtain those benefits. But this is a mixed blessing because obtaining those benefits may force emotional and cultural separation from family members who lack language or educational accomplishments."

Abstract This paper explains that, knowing the cruelties man has inflicted during this century, much of it due to economic reasons, the reader of John Kenneth Galbraith's "The Good Society: A Humane Agenda" wonders whether the concept of a "good society" was a tongue-in-cheek effort to prove to his readers that this "good society" through a higher standard of life is an unattainable goal. The author points out that this book, which demonstrates the demise of Keynesian economics, is more a morality tale than a book on economics. The paper relates that the difficult task Galbreath sets for himself is to differentiate between what is "perfect" and "ideal" and what is achievable, or in his terms---between the "agreeable irrelevant" and the "ultimately possible", which may well contradict each other.
From the Paper "It is idealistic, of course, for anyone trained in economics to proclaim, as Galbreath does, that a good society must provide an upward chance for all, and a reliable economy to sustain employment. This would obviate the "business cycle" of inflation, stagflation, even minor recession. He is, one might comment, a little simplistic when he states the over-obvious: that a steady flow of demand is a vital factor in keeping business going. Of course, if stores sell products customers want, or manufacturers produce goods that are so reasonable to purchase, then the business cycle is on the upswing. What is missing in this idea of a "steady flow" is that manufacturers, given more and improved technology, can now produce higher quality goods more rapidly with robotics and computers that require little or no human assistance, other than supervision. Thus, economics creates the goods at the expense of employment. It is called "downsizing", a word that brings terror to workers and managers alike."
