The Globalization of 'Coolness', 2008.
A discussion of popular culture, racism and the transformation of the Asian "image" in Canada.

Abstract
This paper examines the upsurge in the production of popular culture for mass audiences, with reference to the transformation of "Asian" subculture in Canada; from racist portrayals only decades ago, to their defining "coolness" today. The paper argues that the social transformation of the popular image of this non-western group reflects how pop culture is closely linked to economic power and globalized cultural production in the post war era. The paper explains that Canadian social historians have argued that the Canadian mass media played a critical role in the shaping of racist ideologies and stereotypes to exclude Asians from Canadian mainstream society. In conclusion, the paper shows that as Asian economic growth continues, it appears likely that Canadian pop culture will assume more and more elements of Asian popular culture in the years to come as the "coolness" of Asian culture becomes ever stronger.

Outline:
Introduction
Images of Asia and Canadian Racism
The Cross-Cultural Origins of Cool
Cross-Cultural Coolness and Economic Power

From the Paper
"Today Canada, and in particular its large cities of Toronto and Vancouver, are highly multicultural societies defined by mass media and integrated into the global marketplace. In this highly mediated space, Asian popular culture - from the Hong Kong action movies of John Woo, to the cross-cultural popularity of "bubble tea", anime and manga, to children's television programs such as Sailor Moon and Dragonball Z - has played a significant role in the shaping of our society. This fact is particular ironic given that, only a few decades ago, the popular image of Asian in Canadian society was highly racist."

Climatic Fluctuations, 2005.
This paper explains that global warming and cooling of the earth's atmosphere have shaped the destiny of mankind since the beginning of time; however, today's climatic fluctuations may be man-made.
2,195 words (approx. 8.8 pages), 6 sources, MLA, £ 48.95
» Click here to show/hide summary

Abstract
This paper relates that historians and archaeologists can trace numerous events to smaller climatic fluctuations, such as Europe's "Little Ice Age," which happened in the early Middle Ages bringing strange weather that caused famines, uprisings and withdrawal of northern Icelandic and Greenland colonies. The author points out that some people believe that the major threat to humanity is not diseases, crazed terrorist or the earth being bombarded by asteroids but rather world population growth. Environmental experts are concerned over how many people the earth's atmosphere can support. The paper stresses that a scientific consensus says the most direct result of the many gas emissions is a "global warming" of 1.5 to 4.5 degrees over the next millennium, and that is in addition to a more than evident temperature increase of half a degree.

From the Paper
"The Maldives, a chain of 1,180 islands in the Indian Ocean now sits three feet above the ocean's surface. In his Los Angeles Times article, "Maldives Faces Global Warming Goliath," writer Dexter Filkins says that "the entire nation could vanish, Atlantis-like, into the sea." Last winter, these island states crusaded for marked reductions in global greenhouse gases. While the US has proposed that industrialized nations began to reduce emissions in 2008 (at 1990 levels), the 35 nations Alliance of Small Island States insists on a 20 % cutback by 2005. While the exact danger (and its arrival) is unknown, island countries are anxious about a five-year study by the International Panel of Climate Change that predicts that by 2100, sea levels could rise from 6 inches to 3 feet. If such a dire forecast comes true, the ocean will swallow most of the Maldives. The country's main economic activity, tourism, would be devastated."

Global Warming Theories, 2004.
An examination of various theories about the reason for the phenomenon of global warming.
2,215 words (approx. 8.9 pages), 8 sources, MLA, £ 48.95
» Click here to show/hide summary

Abstract
This paper addresses several theories addressing why Earth has experienced increases in its global temperature over the years. This phenomenon is also known as global warming. It focuses on the studies of Milutin Milankovitch, who proposed a theory of planetary motion that attempted to explain the Earth?s periods of warming and cooling.

From the Paper
"Global warming is one of today?s most pressing issues. Though some dispute its existence, the great majority of individuals ? scientists and lay people ? do believe that the Earth is undergoing an unnatural warming. Hot summers, freak storms, melting glaciers, and other signs all seem to point toward a shift in the kind of weather enjoyed by many regions of the globe. Much of this change has occurred suddenly and rapidly, over the course of the last generation or so. Scientists know that there have been periods of climatic change in the Earth?s past. The fossil and geological records bear witness to these fluctuations. Areas of the world that are today desert were once lush grasslands. Regions now frozen in the grip of perpetual winter were at one time home to tropical rainforests. Seas were to be found where at the present time there is only dry land. Various animal species came and went as the environments to which they had been adapted disappeared. Perhaps most graphic of all the great climatic changes to which the Earth has been subjected during its long history, were the series of ice ages that covered much of the globe in glaciers. Vast sections of Canada, the United States, Europe and Asia were buried beneath miles of ice and snow, the home of specially-adapted animals such as the wooly mammoth and rhinoceros. These great ice sheets retreated only in the geologically recent past. The planet warmed up again only a few thousand years before human beings first began to plant crops and to build cities. As well, there have been minor fluctuations in temperature over the past several millennia. It was a few degrees warmer during much of the Middle Ages, and a few degrees cooler than it is today for the ensuing five centuries or so. But what most disturbs today?s scientists, environmentalists, and politicians, are the sudden changes of the past third of a century. Are we humans at fault? Are the greenhouse gases emitted by our cars and factories are rapidly smothering the Earth? Or is it the fault of the Earth itself ? the result of fluctuations in the planet?s motions and orbit, as hypothesized by the great Serbian scientist Milutin Milankovitch?"

Business Law: The Case of Luke Cool, 2007.
This paper discuses the complex case of Luke Cool, who is suing Bobby's Super Bikes and La Brute Manufacturing.
805 words (approx. 3.2 pages), 1 source, MLA, £ 20.95
» Click here to show/hide summary

Abstract
This paper explains that the likelihood of Luke Cool's receiving damages in this case depends on whether the actions of Super Bikes and La Brute Manufacturing can be described as having been executed using "reasonable care". The author points out that Luke may be entitled to both pecuniary and non-pecuniary damages from La Brute; however, Luke will likely only receive pecuniary damages in his suit against Super Bikes, as in contract law recovery of non-pecuniary damages is very rare. The paper concludes that, given that Luke was extraordinarily negligent in this case by not only continuing to ride the bike knowing it had a dangerous flaw, but also by riding on a difficult path and without a safety helmet, it is likely that his award in this case will be reduced significantly.

From the Paper
"Luke would have no likelihood of successfully suing the employee of Super Bikes who sold him the bike, or the employee who told him to return another day as the part was not in stock, as the law generally distinguishes between those who have a contractual obligation to perform, and those who may due the actual work. While he may sue the employees on the basis of tort of negligence, this is unlikely to be successful due to negligence being defined in the law as failure to show "reasonable care"."

'Moving Chairs, and Why It's Cool' by Timothy J. King", 2006.
A review of timothy J. King's article 'Moving Chairs, and Why It's Cool'.
900 words (approx. 3.6 pages), 1 source, £ 25.95

Abstract
In this paper, King proposes healthy and communicative responses to management strata relationships that were successful within his own experiences. According to the paper, King's view is that the use of dialogues and meetings is a crucial for efficient production, which invariably offers a revolving leadership system through his is symbolic usage of moving chairs. However, more studies should be done to evaluate the real effectiveness of this form of leadership before one should confront the authority of middle and upper management.

From the Paper
J. Timothy King provides an article that is based upon the "moving chairs" of leadership within a small sized corporate atmosphere. The first premise of leadership is many things go unnoticed, especially when communicating a change in management policy. King is often portraying himself in the article as a subordinate that has to work with upper management through a review based initiative that is often erroneous. However, King brings the moving chair element into communicating with his superiors within the review process, which ultimately has him influencing how policy is made within the company. In this manner, King is subjectively redefining the hierarchical role of worker/manager by breaking down barriers through communication and regular meetings. "

Warm Up and Cool Down for Aerobics, 2006.
A survey of exercises needed before and after aerobic workouts.
874 words (approx. 3.5 pages), 4 sources, MLA, £ 22.95
» Click here to show/hide summary

Abstract
The paper reviews the need for warm up and cool down exercises to surround an aerobic workout, identifying the potential health hazards if these exercises are not done. The paper itemizes several exercises within a routine that are needed prior to a workout. The paper concludes that a similar routine should be followed for cooling down after a workout, but that the stretches may be more vigorous since the muscles are already warmed up.

From the Paper
"Warm-ups should precede a work out for at least ten minutes. In addition, it is necessary to ensure that the entire body is adequately warmed up, rather than focusing only on the large muscles that athletes most often anticipate using. For example, an athlete should pay special attention to loosening up his neck. Carelessness with neck exercises can be much worse than with other exercises. Therefore, it is important to use smooth and controlled motions on this part of the body at all times and there should be no jerking or bouncing. The exercises are simple, though; they simply involve moving the neck forward and backward, side to side, and turning the head from left to right. Twenty to thirty repetitions of each movement are adequate to warm up."

Hard Bop and Cool Jazz, 2001.
Discusses differences between the 2 styles; socio-cultural context.
2,025 words (approx. 8.1 pages), 10 sources, £ 50.95

From the Paper
"In July of 1955 the Atlantic Monthly published a lengthy essay in which the author, Arnold Sundgaard, discusses the position of jazz in the 1950s as both a distinctive art form and a mirror for socio-cultural activity. In his exposition, Sundgaard notes that above all else jazz seems to thrive on endless exploration and ceaseless discovery, that it is at its core the expression of some very enduring opposites: freedom and form, responsibility and surrender, exuberance and pain (Sundgaard). It is not surprising then that at the time of Sundgaard?s writing, two of the prevailing popular jazz styles, ?cool jazz? and ?hard bop?, were in many regards opposite by nature. "

Themes of invisibility, acceptance of violence as a way of life, alienation of youth. Indifference of media and police toward young black kids.

From the Paper
"Jess Mowry's novel Way Past Cool focuses on young Oakland, California gang members with compassion and insight. It's a violent, compelling and sad picture of gang culture which depicts 12 and 13-year-old boys who are coming of age under the most dire circumstances. This paper will discuss the novel's major characters and their cultural conflicts as well as how invisibility is reinforced.
In Ralph Ellison's 1962 novel The Invisible Man, the author uses the title of his book to emphasize the struggle of African-Americans for identity in White America. The title of Ellison's book suggests that what the power structure sees in Blacks, especially poor Blacks, is what they want to see, and therefore Blacks are invisible because people refuse to see them. "When they approach me they see only my surroundings themselves, or ..."

Economics and Housing, 2007.
An analysis of the Wall Street Journal article "Housing Market Shows Further Signs of Cooling" by J.R. Hagerty and R. Simon.
715 words (approx. 2.9 pages), 3 sources, MLA, £ 18.95
» Click here to show/hide summary

Abstract
The paper looks at the Wall Street Journal article "Housing Market Shows Further Signs of Cooling" which focuses on the beginning of the decline in the housing market. The paper discusses how the article explains that there has been a change in supply as well as demand, with substantial increases in the inventory of homes available for sale. The analysis in this paper uses economic theories of consumption and supply and demand to explain housing factors described in the news article.

From the Paper
"The article mentions that there has been a slow growth in personal income. Current income is the most relevant determinant of consumption including home purchases. Inflation reduces the real current income; thus, real consumption. The article states that the housing bubble pushed up housing prices, but new factors have also come into play such as higher oil prices and higher interest rates. Higher oil prices are serving as a tax on consumers, leaving them less money to spend on other goods such as housing."
