For example stage one is characterized by trust vs. mistrust; stage two autonomy vs. shame and doubt; stage three initiative vs. guilt; stage four industry vs. inferiority; stage five ego-identity vs. role-confusion; stage six intimacy vs. isolation; stage seven generativity vs. self-absorption; and stage eight integrity vs. despair. One of the most important aspects of Erikson's' theory is the fact that he does not believe develop stops as the individual reaches adulthood. "Intellectual growth from birth to old age is now known as cognition. The Swiss psychologist Jean Piaget (b. 1896) was the first to develop a method to study the way in which infants and children see and understand the world. He was also the first to offer the conclusion that these ways of seeing and understanding are quite different in the infant and child than they are in the adult. His was also the first account of the process of mental growth from infancy to adulthood. This paper will briefly discuss Piaget's theories as a way of leading into the work of Laurence Kohlberg and Erik Erikson. An analysis of Kohlberg's moral reasoning theories and Erikson's eight stages of human development theory will be rendered with a focus on adolescent social development.

Piaget believed that mental growth involves major qualitative changes. Previously, both the empiricists and nativists saw the child as being similar to the adult: the first saw him as an adult-in-training; the latter as an adult-in-miniature. Piaget used qualitative differences to try and map the orderly progression of human intellect as the child grows into an adult. Jennifer stated that she was "seriously involved" with an older male student and that she was planning to marry early, after completing high school; her mother complained that the girl was "boy crazy" and that she was difficult to discipline, with a pronounced tendency to "talk back" and ignore parental rules. Her mother also said that Jennifer did not work on school assignments sufficiently, that her poor grades were chronic, and that her daughter was probably "not going to amount to much." "While many of the studies to date have focused on age of onset, heavy episodic consumption and trend over time, there remains a paucity of research concerning specific variables that can predict why some adolescents progress from light experimentation (drinking outside the home on several occasions, but always fewer than five drinks per occasion) to heavier episodic-type drinking (five or more drinks per occasion) (Gonzalez et al., 2004). To this end, these authors used data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health), which they describe as "a large, national, longitudinal survey of approximately 18,000 adolescents in Grade 7 through 12--we identified a population of adolescent who, as reported at a baseline assessment, had drunk alcohol outside their homes but had not engaged in heavy episodic drinking" (Gonzalez et al., 2004, p. 494). These same adolescents were reinterviewed a year later and data from these interviews were then used as a basis for identifying specific variables that can be reasonably associated with the transition to heavy episodic drinking (Gonzalez et al., 2004).
