Abstract The paper presents a history of the African American struggle starting in the 1850's with the case of Dred Scott. It continues by explaining the status of African Americans during and after the civil war. The paper documents how, in the 1940's and 1950's, African Americans began to challenge the injustices they faced, particularly with regard to education. The paper continues to the 1960's with the rise of the Black Panther Party (BPP) and the Nation of Islam. The paper focuses on the aims and methods used by the BPP and how the FBI tried to discredit the BPP and other Black revolutionary organizations.

Abstract This research studies the ways in which African-Americans become leaders in the United States today, looking at the struggles that they have to overcome in terms of the general level of background racism that still exists in this nation. This paper comes to an understanding of how the particular challenges faced by African-Americans today produce certain kinds of leaders with specific strengths. As a part of understanding how it is that certain African-Americans find themselves called on to be leaders (and how some of them succeed), this paper looks first at some general ideas about leadership, using tenets pulled from communication theory to help us understand why it is that different leaders choose different leadership styles based on the demands of the moment in history they find themselves in.
This paper also looks at some of the most important African-American leaders of the 20th century as a way of attempting to understand if there are cross-generational values, forms of discourse, and styles of leadership that mark most or even all leaders in this community.
Finally, this proposal describes a research design that will allow for a deeper investigation into the ways in which leadership values and communication skills come together in today?s African-American communities to build leaders who are capable of addressing some of the most important issues facing African-Americans today, such as the high incarceration rate of black men, environmental racism, the high rate of single-parent families, and racism, especially by police.

Abstract This paper examines how African-Americans' repeated struggles to obtain freedom from Southern slavery as well as their quest for social, economic and educational equality with whites, have been starkly and vividly described by a number of African-American authors. It points out that among these are the black educational leader Booker T. Washington; the novelist, short story writer and essayist Zora Neale Hurston and the novelist Ralph Ellison. The paper analyzes Washington's "The Atlanta Exposition", Hurston's "How It Feels to Be Colored Me" and Ellison's "Battle Royal" in terms of depictions of the African-American struggle toward equality, freedom and self-actualization.

From the Paper "Slave labor was very important to Southern economy until the 18th century. The hierarchic social structure before the Civil War had the slaves at the bottom and the plantation owners at the top. White landowners, who were the minority, exploited the Black majority. This Black majority had to suffer constant humiliations in the process. The white landowners viewed the Blacks as inferior so as to justify slavery. So as to deliberately justify their underpayment, white landowners must treat or view them as less ambitious and content with a low life status. Whites enjoyed the benefits while Blacks suffered severe disadvantages. The Blacks had no political or legal entitlements or economic rights. Plantation life, especially in the lower South, was difficult and perilous. However, it attracted large numbers of slaves because it offered greater chances of establishing slave families and communities. They often worked under the task system. Under this system, a slave received a task each day and worked until the task was completed. When this happened, the rest of the day became the slave's own time. Each task was extremely hard but the slaves took it because he somewhat exercised some control over the work pace and the length of the work day. They worked in groups called gangs, headed by slave drivers, on crop rows, plowing, planting, cultivating or picking, depending on the season."

Abstract This paper examines how African-Americans struggled to resist stereotypes of race and gender in the face of hostile and aggressive racism and how white southerners had for generations 'owned' their African-American counterparts making the struggle for equality and respect a long and difficult process. It discusses how, although it is important not to underestimate the achievements of African-American women, especially, the vitriolic hostility and fervent racism meant certain white constructed race and gender roles, still live on in the south.

As the slaves were property of the plantation master, there was no need for males to act as the family head or providers. Stanley Elkins argues the severity of the slave regime crippled the slave personality, which therefore made slaves unable to partake in any actions that would resemble those of an organised community. Elkins believed that the severe mental trauma resulted in a defensive response, manifested in a loss of individuality, and instead created one uniform psychologically handicapped personality, which he termed 'Sambo.' Some have contended that the Christian Church as acted as an opiate for generations to the African American people. One critic stated, "Instead of cursing the white man, [blacks] shout at the Lord. Instead of kicking whitey, [blacks] kick over the pew." Those who believe that the African American Church acts as an opiate to the black sub-culture contend that it induces many individuals to appeal to God for social change, when, more realistically, they should be acting to bring about social change themselves; in other words, they believe that the church provides an outlet for black people's frustrations, so they can be directed away from actions that might elementally undermine the current radicalized American social system. Eventually, a scientific study conducted by Gary Marx in the 1960's attempted to find any correlation between the level of religious fervor of black Americans and their associated beliefs regarding the Civil Rights movement: "Specifically, Marx established that in his sample, the greater the subjective importance of religion to black respondents, and the more often they went to church, the less militant they were in support of the civil rights issues." Even more recent theorists have agreed with the assessment of the role of the African American Church in social activism; arguing that it is centrally a device for passivity and control."
