Paper Summary:

This paper explores and compares critical and post-modern views of the organisation. The paper addresses F.W. Taylor's principals of scientific management and McGregor's theory X and theory Y management perspectives. The paper shows how both perspectives are alive and well in the contemporary organisation, whether considering the traditional automotive sector or the more contemporary service based call centre.

From the Paper:

"In the first instance the literature on critical perspectives of the organisation provides a backdrop of information and literature which is written about organisations and managers rather than for their express use as with other areas of the literature on business and management (Cassey 2002). As such, one view is that the critical perspective thus offers a more objective view point of the interaction between those in organisations than other areas of the literature designed to aid managers and organisations in their decision making.
"One of the key tenets of the critical perspective may be that society and organisations are to be viewed as a battle ground between managers and employees (Grey and Willmott 2009). The critical perspective paints a fairly dim view of the capitalist system in which it is considered that managers and those with power within organisations attempt to deskill and commoditise those who work for them. If the critical perspective is correct, then it should follow that managers would be seen as behaving in a way which is consistent with such indictments of the critical perspective. In the first case the essay will now turn to the work of FW Taylor and the principals of scientific management so as to analyse the concept of the critical perspective in the context of the business environment."
