"The Matrix"

# 58460
"The Matrix"
A macro analysis of how narrative and genre are used to generate meaning and response in the opening sequence of "The Matrix".
2,500 words (approx. 10 pages) | 1 source | MLA | 2004 United Kingdom

Paper Summary:

The paper examines how "The Matrix" uses many stock science fiction genre elements, as well as a classic opening technique, in combination with a modern style, technology and aspects of other genres, to appeal to a wide audience and keep them unsure of the situation and intrigued as to what will happen next.

From the Paper:

"The science fiction genre has developed since early films, such as La voyage dans la lunes (George Melies 1902) and Bladerunner (Ridley Scott 1982) due to technology allowing the films to be made in a different way, and with more special effects, but the themes of science fiction films have changed also. Early movies depicted an optimistic future in which the world would be clean and perfect; robots would enhance human life; people would be truly free; and "good" governments would rule the universe fairly. This is particularly apparent in films of the 1950s-1980s such as the Star Trek movies, in which we are able to cruise through the galaxy with friendly robots and aliens, and the only dangers come from outside sources."
