American Rebels and the War of Independence
An analysis of how, against all odds, the American rebels were able to achieve victory over the British in the American War of Independence.
2,949 words (approx. 11.8 pages) | 13 sources | MLA | 2004 United Kingdom

Paper Summary:

The paper examines all the main reasons for the outcome of the American War of Independence, from the political and military situations on either side upon the commencement of the War, the fortunate and crucial assistance of the French, the genius of the leading rebels and the incompetence of the British commanders. The pivotal events in the conflict are also examined and discussed.

From the Paper:

"Deserving of more blame was Lord Sandwich, First Lord of the Admiralty. He was an aristocrat with no discernible talent , and a very unpopular politician. As his title suggests, he was responsible for the major appointments in the Royal Navy, an institution in which he was despised , and one which his command divided, as Admiral Rodney noted: "So violent was the spirit of party and faction in his own fleet, as almost to supersede and extinguish the affection to their Sovereign and their country" . Rodney was a high-ranking, well-connected admiral in the Royal Navy, so he would have been aware of the issues in question, and in a private letter to his friend he has no reason to distort facts, so his description of naval rancour can be viewed as accurate."
